The Google Home Speaker is worth considering if you already use Google Home and want a compact speaker with Gemini voice assistance. The important buying decisions are the ongoing subscription and the retailer's regional model. A listing that merely says “Gemini” may be a completely different brand of audio equipment.

The Amazon listing for the Google Home Speaker in Porcelain identifies model GA09978-US-2 and explicitly labels it a US import. Before ordering, confirm the supplied plug, UK warranty arrangements, seller and return terms. Do not assume that an Amazon.co.uk listing means a UK-market unit.

Do you need a subscription?
Basic Gemini for Home, media playback and everyday smart-home tasks remain available without Google Home Premium. Gemini Live requires a paid plan. Google's UK page lists Standard at £8 monthly or £80 annually, with a six-month trial for eligible new subscribers. Advanced is £16 monthly or £160 annually and adds camera-history features. Our recommendation: decide whether you will use live conversations after the trial. If your main uses are timers and music, do not justify the purchase using paid features you would cancel. If you already own a working speaker, write down the specific task this upgrade would improve before buying.
What the hardware actually includes
Google's specifications list one 58 mm full-range driver, three far-field microphones, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, a Thread 1.3 border router and Matter support through Google Home. The speaker is 86.6 mm tall and 107 mm across, with a captive cable and a 30 W USB-C power adapter. It has a physical microphone-mute switch.
These specifications do not establish how it will sound in your room. Check your devices' Google Home compatibility individually rather than assuming that every smart-home product will connect. Google does not list Zigbee in this specification, and an NPU in the processor is not evidence that the complete Gemini service runs offline.
Who should buy it?
Consider it for an existing Google Home setup when voice assistance and compact size solve a clear need. Compare the UK-store option before choosing the import. If you want a portable battery speaker, a dedicated Zigbee controller or a purchase with no ongoing AI subscription decisions, reconsider whether this is the right category of product.
